ANC-PAC Endorses McGoff In Indiana Primary Against Armenian Genocide Denier, Rep. Dan Burton
McGoff Positioned to Defeat Vulnerable Burton
February 11, 2010 Indianapolis, IN - The Armenian National Committee - Political Action Committee (ANC-PAC) has officially endorsed Dr. John McGoff in the hotly contested Republican primary against incumbent Representative Dan Burton in Indiana's 5th Congressional District. "The bad news is that Congressman Dan Burton has stridently opposed Congressional Armenian Genocide affirmation at every opportunity during his twenty-five years in office,” stated ANC-PAC representative Ari Terjanian. "The good news is that Dr. McGoff is powerfully positioned to defeat him in the Republican primary and provide the people of Indiana's 5th District with the type of moral and public policy leadership they deserve.” Dr. McGoff, who received 45% of the vote in the 2008 Republican primary against Burton, has pledged his full support on a variety of issues of special concern to the Armenian American community, including Armenian Genocide recognition, self-determination for Nagorno Karabagh and increased foreign aid to Armenia and Nagorno-Karabagh. Responding to the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA) Candidate Questionnaire, Dr. McGoff explained: "The Armenian Genocide is a fact. Any opinion to the contrary is ignorant, uninformed and false. I will vehemently oppose any effort to call into doubt the Armenian Genocide.” Regarding ongoing efforts to finding a lasting resolution to the Nagorno Karabagh conflict, McGoff stated his position clearly: "I will support any action that would allow the people of Nagorno Karabagh to determine their own status and support the rights of its people to be independent and free from any unwanted oppression or interference. I will also support multi-lateral talks between the Armenians, Azerbaijanis, Russians and the United States to help facilitate the will of Nagorno Karabagh and to ensure that the people's decision is respected and protected.” In sharp contrast, Rep. Dan Burton has been a consistent and ardent advocate of Turkish government interests, opposing Armenian Genocide legislation and even questioning the historical truth of the Armenian Genocide in statements before the House Foreign Affairs Committee and on the House floor. Since his election in 1983, Rep. Burton has consistently received an "F” rating from the ANCA in its Congressional Report Card. The ANC-PAC is a non-partisan federally registered political action committee established to support campaign committees for Members of Congress who share the values of the Armenian American community. The ANC-PAC is at the forefront of efforts to ensure that the voice of the Armenian American community is clearly heard in our nation's capital. The ANC-PAC continues a century old tradition of Armenian American engagement on the public policy issues facing national political leaders, both in the U.S. Congress and the White House. |
