Republican Congressman and Presidential Candidate Duncan Hunter Backs Armenian Genocide Resolution

May 9, 2007
Los Angeles, CA - The Armenian National Committee - Political Action Committee has issued a statement praising the Ranking Member on the House Armed Services Committee, Congressman Duncan Hunter (R-CA), for backing a human rights measure concerning the Armenian Genocide. Hunter, who has cosponsored the Armenian Genocide Resolution (H.Res.106), has represented California's 52nd Congressional District since 1980 and is now a Republican Presidential candidate. The Congressional resolution marks the premeditated murder of 1.5 million Armenian Christians as the first act of genocide of the 20th century.

A Vietnam veteran, who served in the 173rd Airborne and 75th Army Rangers, Hunter is widely respected for his strong command of defense and national security matters. As Chairman of the Armed Services Committee (2002-2006), Congressman Hunter has worked to protect U.S. defense jobs in aircraft, ship repair, machine tools, textile, steel and titanium to ensure that what he calls the "Arsenal of Democracy," the U.S. industrial base, is maintained to provide security in time of war. As reported in national newspapers, Congressman Hunter launched his bid for the White House on January 25, 2007, pledging to continue the legacy set by Ronald Reagan.

"Armenian Americans across the United States are proud that Congressman Hunter has joined over 190 Members of Congress as a sponsor of the Armenian Genocide resolution," remarked ANC-PAC spokesperson Ara Papazian. "Congressman Hunter's leadership on this human rights issue is a signal that he, like Ronald Reagan, is committed to speaking clearly about the Armenian Genocide," Papazian added.

Following his election to the presidency in 1980, President Reagan distinguished himself as the last U.S. President to properly acknowledge the Armenian Genocide as "genocide." In Proclamation 4838, issued on April 22, 1981 to proclaim April 26-May 3 as "Days of Remembrance of Victims of Holocaust," Reagan stated, "Like the genocide of the Armenians before it, and the genocide of the Cambodians which followed it and like too many other such persecutions of too many other peoples-the lessons of the Holocaust must never be forgotten."

Earlier this year it was reported that Congressman Hunter's son Duncan is planning on running for the Congressional seat held by his father for nearly three decades. The Congressman's son is a 30-year-old Marine who has served two tours in Iraq and last month was recalled to active duty and expects to be in Iraq or Afghanistan when the election to replace his father occurs. Representatives of the Armenian National Committee in the San Diego area will be in touch with the campaign of Congressman Hunter's son and salute his participation as a member of America's armed forces.

The ANC-PAC is a non-partisan federally registered political action committee established to support campaign committees for Members of Congress who share the values of the Armenian American community. The ANC-PAC is at the forefront of efforts to ensure that the voice of the Armenian American community is clearly heard in our nation's capital. The ANC-PAC continues a century old tradition of Armenian Americans engagement on the public policy issues facing national political leaders, both in the U.S. Congress and the White House.
