ANC-PAC Holds Fundraiser For
Congresswoman Berkley September 6, 2006 LAS VEGAS, NEVADA - The Armenian National Committee Political Action Committee (ANC-PAC) recently held a successful fundraiser for Congresswoman Shelley Berkley (D-Nevada). The fundraiser was held on August 25th at the home of Ara Shirinian, an Armenian American community leader in the State of Nevada. As a member of the House International Relations Committee, Congresswoman Berkley expressed her support for establishing a U.S. free trade agreement with the Republic of Armenia and her strong opposition to the ongoing blockade of Armenia by the governments of Turkey and Azerbaijan. She noted her opposition to railways that are built in the region but that are designed to bypass Armenia, as well as her opposition to Turkey joining the European Union. During the event, Rep. Berkley addressed the issue of Ambassador-designate Richard Hoagland, stating that it is imperative that any future U.S.Ambassador to Armenia must properly acknowledge the Armenian Genocide. The Congresswoman stated firmly that the time has long past for the United States to officially acknowledge the Armenian Genocide. "Congresswoman Berkley deserves the support of not only Armenian Americans in the state of Nevada, but Armenians throughout the United States," said Ara Shirinian. "She is a firm supporter of human rights and is just the type of individual we need to keep in Congress so she can defend the concerns of Armenian American voters in Nevada," he added. Congresswoman Berkley was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1998 and has been a member of the Armenian Caucus since taking her seat in Congress. She has been a long time supporter of Armenian issues, has co-sponsored the Armenian Genocide Resolution, participated in Armenian Genocide observances on Capitol Hill, and signed the April 2005 letter to President Bush urging him to honor his pledge to recognize the Armenian Genocide. She has received an ‘A' rating in the ANCA's annual Congressional Report Card. The ANC-PAC is a non-partisan federally registered political action committee established to support campaign committees for Members of Congress who share the values of the Armenian American community. The ANC-PAC is at the forefront of efforts to ensure that the voice of the Armenian American community is clearly heard in our nation's capital. The ANC-PAC continues a century old tradition of Armenian Americans engagement on the public policy issues facing national political leaders, both in the U.S. Congress and the White House. |
