ANC-PAC Supporters To Host Event For
Nevada Republican Senator John Ensign

Conservative Senator Has Been An Outstanding Supporter
of Armenian Issues

July 17, 2006
Las Vegas, NV - Members and supporters of the Armenian National Committee - Political Action Committee will join together on July 21, 2006 to recognize U.S. Senator John Ensign of Nevada. The reception for Senator Ensign will be held at the home of Mr. & Mrs. Levon Gulbenkian in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Senator Ensign has been a champion of issues important to his Armenian American constituents since his election to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1995. On November 7, 2003, with the full support of members of the Nevada Armenian National Committee, John Ensign was elected to the U.S. Senate.

"The growing Armenian American community in Nevada welcomes the opportunity to show our appreciation for Senator Ensign's longtime support for Armenian issues," commented Nevada ANC Co-Chairman Ara Shirinian. "Senator Ensign received a grade of A+ from the ANCA Congressional Report Card last year and for good reason," Shirinian added.

Senator Ensign is the original sponsor of S.Res.320, a resolution that calls on the President to ensure that the foreign policy of the United States reflects appropriate understanding and sensitivity concerning issues related to human rights, ethnic cleansing, and genocide documented in the United States record relating to the Armenian Genocide. This legislation currently enjoys the support of 34 U.S. Senators and is pending before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

After introducing S.Res.320 Senator Ensign remarked, "It is as important as ever that American foreign policy reflect our nation's recognition of the Armenian Genocide. It is my hope that by acknowledging such atrocities, we might help avoid them in the future. I applaud the Armenian people for their courage and persistence in bringing this horrible chapter in history to light."

In June of 2003, Senator Ensign drafted and introduced S.Res.164, a Genocide Resolution that sought to officially mark the 15th anniversary of the U.S. implementation of the Genocide Convention. Unfortunately, Senate President Bill Frist failed to bring S.Res.164 to the floor of the Senate for a vote and so the bill was never adopted. Throughout his Congressional career, Senator Ensign has fought for smaller, more effective and efficient government; lower taxes and a robust national defense. Senator Ensign has also been an ardent proponent of quality health care for Nevada's seniors and veterans.

Senator Ensign serves on the following committees: Armed Services; Budget; Commerce, Science and Transportation; Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP); and Veterans Affairs. Ensign is Chairman of the Readiness and Management Support Subcommittee of the Armed Services Committee and of the Subcommittee on Technology, Innovation and Competitiveness of the Commerce Committee. In addition, Senator Ensign chairs the Republican High Tech Task Force; serves as Vice Chairman of the Republican Steering Committee and is a member of the Senate Fiscal Watch Team, whose goal is to reduce government spending and bring accountability to the system.

Individuals interested in attending or contributing funds for the reception in support of Senator Ensign's re-election campaign are encouraged to contact Mrs. Jackie Dadaian at (702) 256-8925. Checks may be made payable to Ensign for Senate.

The ANC-PAC is a non-partisan federally registered political action committee established to support campaign committees for Members of Congress who share the values of the Armenian American community. The ANC-PAC is at the forefront of efforts to ensure that the voice of the Armenian American community is clearly heard in our nation's capital. The ANC-PAC continues a century old tradition of Armenian Americans engagement on the public policy issues facing national political leaders, both in the U.S. Congress and the White House.
