ANC-PAC Endorses Armenian American Republican Running for California Congressional Seat

Backs Kaloogian for 50th District Race in San Diego

December 22, 2005
LOS ANGELES, CA - In an effort to help a third Armenian American join the U.S. Congress, the Armenian National Committee - Political Action Committee (ANC-PAC) today endorsed the candidacy of Republican Howard Kaloogian for California's 50th Congressional District. Currently Anna Eshoo (D-CA) and John Sweeney (R-NY) are the two members of the U.S. House of Armenian heritage.

"The ANC-PAC wholeheartedly endorses Howard Kaloogian's Congressional campaign," remarked ANC-PAC spokesman Ara J. Bedrosian. "Howard has the drive, the principle, and the grassroots connection to the voters in his District needed to win this race. The ANC-PAC encourages all Armenian Americans to join us in backing Howard's campaign so that he can become a member of Congress we will all be proud of. The ANC-PAC also believes that Howard's election to the Congress will serve to shift the attitude towards Armenian American issues among Republican leaders in the U.S. House of Representatives."

Kaloogian, a former member of the California State Assembly, has been a successful businessman, educator, attorney, and conservative political leader. During his tenure in the California legislature, he actively supported measures commemorating the Armenian Genocide and other initiatives of deep concern to the Armenian American community.

The 50th Congressional District faces a vacancy due to the recent resignation of Randy "Duke" Cunningham. The Congressional District includes a large portion of northern San Diego County, encompassing among other municipalities, the cities of Escondido, San Marcos and Carlsbad.

At a recent gathering of Armenian American Republican leaders in Southern California, Kaloogian expressed his commitment to seeking House passage for two measures pending in the Congress that mark the Armenian Genocide. The House International Relations Committee overwhelmingly adopted the two Armenian Genocide resolutions on September 15, 2005. Republican leaders are presently considering whether to bring the measures to a vote on the House floor.

On December 15, 2005 Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger declared that a special general election will be held on June 6, 2005 to fill the vacancy in the 50th Congressional District. A Republican primary, pitting Kaloogian against a number of prominent Republican opponents, is set for April 11, 2005. Among Kaloogian's expected opponents in the Republican primary are Turkish-American Alan Uke, former Congressman Brian Bilbray, and State Senator Bill Morrow.

"I have always been proud of my Armenian Christian heritage and was thrilled to visit Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh only a few years ago," said Kaloogian. "Today, I'm honored to have the endorsement and active support of the ANC-PAC, an organization that has traditionally taken the lead in advancing Armenian American issues. Next year in Congress I will work with both Democrats and Republicans to advance issues that we all deeply care about."
